Window Frame Types in Newport Properties
Newport’s housing stock covers more than a century of construction. The frame type in your home shapes everything from surface preparation to product choice.

Timber Sash Frames
Found in Victorian terraces across Stow Hill, Baneswell, Maindee, and Pillgwenlly. These are original single-glazed or draught-proofed sash windows, typically built between 1860 and 1910.
Sash frames have settled over 100+ years. The box frames can be soft in places, the glazing bars are narrow, and the paint build-up is often thick and uneven. Getting a lasting finish here requires careful preparation rather than a quick sand and repaint.
Timber Casement Frames
The standard frame in Edwardian semis and 1930s properties across Rogerstone, Bassaleg, and the Risca Road corridor. These are typically softwood or redwood frames, often with a top-opening hopper light.
Casement frames respond well to proper preparation and a quality oil-based or water-based topcoat. They are straightforward to work with when the timber is sound.
uPVC Frames
Most homes in Malpas, Bettws, Ringland, and Bassaleg had their original timber frames replaced during the 1980s and 1990s with white uPVC casements. Many are now 30 to 40 years old and have yellowed, gone chalky, or no longer match updated exterior render.
Aluminium Frames
Common in new-build properties at Llanwern village, Langstone, and along the Celtic Manor corridor. Aluminium requires etching primer before any topcoat is applied. Without it, adhesion fails and the paint lifts within months.
One important note: homes built before 1980 may have lead-based paint on window frames. We strongly recommend testing before any sanding or stripping work begins. See the FAQ below for details on how we handle this.
Painting Timber Frames
Timber frame painting takes time. Preparation accounts for most of it, and cutting corners here is what causes early failure.
Surface Preparation
We clean down all frame surfaces, removing dirt, mould, and any loose or flaking paint. Where existing paint is thick and uneven, we sand back to a stable base. On sash windows with heavy paint build-up, we work carefully to avoid over-sanding glazing bars or disturbing the sash mechanism.
Rot Assessment
We probe for soft spots in the timber, particularly at the cill, the bottom rail, and any joints where water has been sitting. Minor rot is treated with a two-part wood hardener and filler rather than replaced, where structurally appropriate.
Priming
Bare or repaired timber gets a coat of oil-based primer. This seals the wood, prevents moisture ingress, and gives the undercoat something to grip. Skipping this step on bare timber is one of the most common causes of early paint failure.
Undercoat and Topcoat
A full undercoat is applied across all surfaces once the primer is dry. We then apply one or two topcoats depending on condition and finish required. For exterior timber in Newport, we use a flexible, weatherproof paint that handles the movement timber goes through as temperatures change across the seasons.

The result is a frame that looks right and stays looking right.

Painting uPVC Frames
uPVC is paintable with the right products and preparation. The real question is whether it is the right choice for your property.

When Painting Makes Sense
Painting makes sense when the frames are structurally sound with no failed seals or cracked profiles, the colour has yellowed or no longer suits the property, full replacement would be disproportionate in cost, or you want a temporary refresh ahead of a sale.
Replacement makes more sense when the frames are genuinely old, the glazing seals have failed, or the profiles have begun to warp or crack. We will say so at the quote visit if that is the case.
How We Paint uPVC
We clean the surface thoroughly to remove all grease, dirt, and chalky oxidation. We then apply an adhesion promoter, which chemically prepares the uPVC surface to accept paint. Without this step, standard primer simply sits on the surface and peels away.
A specialist plastic primer follows, then one or two topcoats in your chosen colour. We use products specifically formulated for uPVC and flexible plastics, not standard masonry or wood paints.
Expected Lifespan
A properly painted uPVC frame, with correct preparation and quality products, can look excellent and last four to six years before it needs attention again.
South Wales Weather and Window Frame Protection
Newport sits in a weather corridor. The Bristol Channel drives high humidity and persistent rainfall from the south. Annual rainfall is above the UK average, and window frames feel every bit of it.
Mould on North-Facing Frames
North-facing and east-facing frames in shaded positions get less sun and stay damp longer after rain. We treat mould before any prep work begins, not after, and use paints with fungicidal properties where it is a recurring problem.
Salt Air in Pill and Pillgwenlly
Properties closest to the river and the channel experience mild salt air exposure. This accelerates oxidation on metal window fixings and hardware. We address corroding metal components during the prep stage and use a protective topcoat on the frame itself.
Freeze-Thaw and uPVC in Winter
Newport winters involve enough temperature cycling to matter for painted timber. Water trapped in micro-cracks expands as it freezes and forces the paint away from the substrate. Flexible topcoats and thorough prep at the priming stage both reduce this risk. Very old uPVC that has not been maintained is more prone to minor cracking at fixing points during cold winters.

In Newport, product choice and surface preparation are not optional extras.
Our Process
1. Free Quote Visit
We visit the property, look at the frame types, assess condition, and talk through what you want to achieve. If we spot rot, lead paint indicators, or anything that changes the approach, we tell you at this stage. No obligation.
2. Written Quote
You receive a clear written quote covering all surfaces, materials, and labour. No surprises on the day.
3. Preparation
We clean down all frames, treat any mould, sand back loose paint, prime bare timber or etched aluminium, and fill and harden any rot-affected areas. This stage takes the most time. We do not rush it.
4. Painting
Undercoat and topcoat applied with care, particularly around glazing edges and glazing bars where neat lines matter. We work methodically and keep access tidy throughout.
5. Final Check and Tidy
We walk through the finished work with you before we leave. Any glass smears from cutting in are cleaned off. All materials and dust sheets are removed from the site.
