Door Painting Services in Newport

Victorian Timber Panel Doors

Victorian terraces on Stow Hill and Maindee are known for their solid four-panel front doors. Many of the same property types also have original or period-style panel doors internally — hallway doors, living room doors, and the door to the staircase.

Accumulated paint layers on mouldings dull the profile detail of the panel. Externally, moisture damage combines with paint build-up. We assess paint depth, strip where necessary, repair any degraded timber, prime correctly, and apply two finish coats in the agreed colour and sheen.

uPVC Doors (Post-War Estates — Bettws, Allt-yr-yn)

Post-war estates across Bettws and Allt-yr-yn replaced original timber with uPVC doors in the 1990s and 2000s. These fade over time and rarely match the surrounding joinery once the colour has shifted.

We use a specialist adhesion primer designed for plastic substrates before applying the finish coat. Without this step, standard paint will not bond and will lift within months. With the right system, a repainted uPVC door lasts five to eight years.

Composite Doors (Langstone, Bassaleg New-Builds)

Composite doors on Langstone and Bassaleg new-builds are well-engineered but come in a limited factory range. After a few years, homeowners often want a different colour or the composite surface starts to look dull.

The surface must be degreased, primed, and finished with a product rated for exterior use. We carry out a patch test on request where adhesion is uncertain.

Internal Doors

Internal panel doors throughout Newport homes — hallways, bedrooms, living rooms — are often painted over many times without preparation. The result is soft edges on the mouldings and a slightly thick, rough feel to the surface.

We prepare internal doors to the same standard as external. Eggshell or satin for most rooms; gloss where a harder, more traditional finish is wanted. For a full room refresh including doors, architraves, and skirting, see our interior painting page. For a dedicated front door repaint, see our front door painting page.

How Door Painting Works

1. Assessment

We inspect every door in scope — checking paint depth, timber condition, and the condition of frames and surrounds. For uPVC and composite, we check surface preparation requirements and advise on expected outcome.

2. Preparation

Heavy paint build-up is stripped where necessary. Shrunken filler is removed and replaced. Timber degradation is treated. All surfaces are sanded to a key before primer is applied.

3. Priming

Bare or stripped timber receives oil-based or water-based primer appropriate to the finish. uPVC and composite doors receive a specialist adhesion primer designed for plastic substrates.

4. Finish Coats

Two coats of the agreed finish. Brushed in the direction of the grain on timber. Cut in cleanly around glazing panels and hardware.

5. Completion

Masking is removed and glass is cleaned. Hardware is replaced and checked. The door is inspected before we leave.

Door Painting Across Newport’s Housing Stock

Newport’s housing stock means no two doors are the same. Each property type has different doors and each door type needs a different approach.

Victorian Terraces (Maindee, Stow Hill, Baneswell)

A Maindee Victorian terrace carries four-panel timber doors with moulded details, painted and repainted over 130 years. Paint build-up on the mouldings is the most common issue — it fills in the profile and dulls the door’s period character.

Externally, south-west facing doors catch the full Bristol Channel weather. Sill and frame condition is assessed at every visit.

Post-War Estates and New-Builds

A Bettws post-war semi has a uPVC door that has faded to a chalky grey. A Langstone new-build has a composite door in a colour the homeowner has grown tired of. Both can be repainted with the right system to a finish that holds for five to eight years.

Standalone or as Part of a Wider Project

We paint doors as a standalone job or as part of a wider interior or exterior repaint. For exterior work beyond just doors, see our exterior painters page. For hallway and landing decoration including doors, see our hallway painting page.

Door Painting Costs in Newport

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01633 603793 for a precise quote.

Typical ranges:

  • Victorian timber panel door — good condition, no stripping needed: £90 to £160 per door including frame and architrave
  • Victorian timber door with significant build-up or rot repair: £160 to £280 per door
  • uPVC door — specialist adhesion system: £120 to £190
  • Composite door — specialist system: £130 to £210
  • Set of internal doors (3–5 doors, standard semi): £350 to £650 depending on condition

Paint Build-Up

A door painted many times without preparation needs more work to achieve a clean result. This is the most common cost driver on Newport Victorian terraces.

Timber Condition

South-west facing exterior doors on Newport terraces are exposed to heavy weather. Sill and frame rot adds preparation time and increases the overall cost of the job.

Glazing Complexity

Doors with stained glass, original fanlights, or decorative glazing panels take longer to mask and work around cleanly. This adds time to the job and is factored into the quote.
