Bathroom Paint Finishes

Choosing the right paint finish is the difference between a bathroom that lasts and one that peels within a year.

Anti-mould paint

Anti-mould paints contain fungicidal additives that inhibit mould growth on the surface. They are the right call for Newport Victorian terraces with poor ventilation. They do not eliminate the source of moisture. They reduce the rate at which mould returns after treatment. Combined with proper surface preparation, they extend the life of the finish significantly in high-risk bathrooms.

Satin

Satin is the most common choice for bathroom walls. It has a low sheen, is easy to wipe down, and holds up well in steam environments. It works on plasterboard walls in Llanwern en-suites and on properly primed plaster in older properties. Most standard bathroom repaints use satin throughout.

Eggshell

Eggshell has a slightly flatter finish than satin and suits bathrooms where a softer look is preferred. It is durable, wipeable, and handles moisture well on walls that are not directly splashed. Good choice for Newport terraces where the bathroom also functions as a washroom with moderate steam exposure.

Specialist bathroom paint

Some manufacturers produce bathroom-specific emulsions designed to handle higher moisture levels than standard satin. These are worth using in rooms with limited ventilation where condensation is regular. They typically have better mould resistance built in and a tighter surface film.

What to avoid in wet rooms: Standard matt emulsion has no place in a bathroom. It absorbs moisture, stains easily, and cannot be wiped down. Even in low-use bathrooms, it will fail within a year in Newport’s humidity.

What’s Included

A bathroom repaint with Orchid Decor covers everything from preparation to completion.

Surface preparation

Full surface preparation, including cleaning back any mould and treating affected areas before any paint is applied.

Correct priming

Priming with the correct primer for the substrate, whether lime plaster, standard plaster, or plasterboard.

Two finish coats

Two finish coats in the chosen paint system, cut in cleanly around tiles, fittings, and ceiling lines.

We also provide ventilation advice, flagging if the room needs improved airflow to protect the finish long term. On completion, all masking, dust sheets, and materials are removed. Our interior painting services cover everything from single rooms to full-house redecorations.

Our Bathroom Painting Process

1. Free quote visit

We visit the bathroom, assess the walls and ceiling, check for existing mould or surface damage, and identify the substrate. We discuss finish options and ventilation with you at this stage. No obligation.

2. Surface preparation

Any mould is cleaned back and treated before we apply anything. This is the most important step. We do not skip it.

3. Priming

The correct primer goes on before any finish coat. Lime plaster walls need a breathable primer. Plasterboard takes a standard multi-surface primer. The primer seals the surface and gives the finish coat something to bond to properly.

4. Two finish coats

We apply two coats of the agreed finish. Each coat is cut in cleanly around tiles, around fittings, and along the ceiling. We work carefully in small rooms, protecting tiles, fittings, and floors throughout.

5. Handover and ventilation check

Before we leave, we walk through the finished room with you. We will also flag if the ventilation in the bathroom needs attention. A great paint job lasts much longer in a well-ventilated room.

Newport Bathroom Challenges

Bathrooms in Newport are harder to paint well than most rooms in the house. The Bristol Channel climate brings above-average humidity to the city year-round.

Moisture and condensation

Newport’s coastal proximity keeps humidity elevated. In Victorian terraces with no extractor fan, a daily shower generates condensation that has nowhere to go. It settles on walls and ceilings, gets behind paint films, and mould follows.

Standard emulsion fails quickly in these conditions. The fix starts with cleaning back any existing mould, treating the surface, priming correctly, and then applying a finish rated for high-humidity environments.

Victorian layout and surface constraints

Maindee terraces were built with the smallest possible bathroom footprint. Most are original-layout rooms, bath only, with walls that have been tiled, re-tiled, and painted over decades. Behind those tiles is often lime plaster, which requires breathable finishes.

A standard modern paint applied directly over lime plaster can trap moisture, cause the plaster to degrade, and the paint to peel within months. Small rooms also make prep harder around the cistern, bath panel, and ceiling line.

New-build en-suites in Llanwern and Langstone

These are easier to work with. Plasterboard walls, mechanical extractor fans, and modern construction mean moisture management is already built in. The main requirement is a quality bathroom-rated finish applied over a suitable primer, durable and cleanable for daily use.

Post-war semis

Malpas and Ringland semis have separate bathrooms and separate WC rooms. These tend to be better ventilated and less prone to severe mould. But even here, a poorly chosen paint or a skipped priming stage shortens the lifespan of the finish significantly.

Bathroom Painting Costs in Newport

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01633 603793 for a precise quote.

Small Victorian bathroom

Maindee, Stow Hill, Baneswell. Original-layout bath and WC rooms. Lime plaster walls. Mould treatment often needed. Typical cost: £180 to £280.

Separate bathroom in post-war semi

Malpas, Bettws, Ringland. Standard plaster walls, separate bathroom room, usually good condition. Typical cost: £220 to £320.

Modern en-suite

Llanwern, Langstone. Plasterboard walls, compact layout, clean surfaces. Straightforward prep. Typical cost: £180 to £260.

Bathroom painting costs are driven by three things: the size of the room, the condition of the surfaces, and the finish specified. Mould treatment adds time and materials. Lime plaster walls require a breathable primer. Ceilings with heavy condensation staining need more preparation. All figures are guides. Actual cost depends on surface condition, access, and finish chosen.
